Florence to Rome by train: a practical city-break guide

Open my trip notebook ↗

Already planning time in Florence? You could make Rome the next part of the trip without hiring a car. I’d leave a few days for the city and compare the train options before settling on accommodation.

How does Rome fit into an Italian rail holiday?

This journey starts in Florence, not on a direct train from London. Pairing Florence with Rome gives you two different city experiences without driving between them.

I’d allow at least three nights in Rome if you can. That leaves more room to enjoy the city and less pressure to rush from one landmark to the next. Build the trip around your budget rather than the longest list of attractions.

Which Florence and Rome stations should you choose?

High-speed trains connect the two cities. Search for Firenze Santa Maria Novella and Roma Termini if those central stations suit your plans, and check the actual stations shown on the departure you select. Other station names can appear in the results.

Italo advertises journeys between the cities of around an hour and a half. I’d still check the time of the specific service you’re buying, because the train and date determine your actual journey.

How can you avoid spending the break criss-crossing Rome?

Choose an arrival that leaves time to reach your accommodation and settle in. I’d keep that first day local, then organise the following days by area.

One day might focus on ancient Rome, another on the Vatican area or neighbourhood walks. Check attraction availability and entry arrangements separately. Your train ticket doesn’t include sightseeing admissions or local transport, so leave room for those costs in the budget.

What should you check before buying a ticket?

Before paying, I’d look at more than the headline fare:

  • Confirm the train and both stations.
  • Read change conditions and luggage guidance.
  • If using a rail pass, check that the operator is covered and whether reservations are needed.
  • Leave a generous margin before an essential flight or international departure.

You can extend the holiday with another Italian city if time allows. Save your tickets offline and check live service information before heading to the station.
