Europe / GOBYTRAIN GUIDELondon to Amsterdam by train: a practical city-break guide
A few days of canals, museums and neighbourhood walks might be just the sort of break you fancy. I’d give Amsterdam enough time to enjoy it, with a few priorities and plenty of room between them.
How long should you stay in Amsterdam?
I’d consider three or four nights, depending on your budget. That gives the rail journey room to be part of the holiday and leaves you time for more than a quick look around.
Pick the museums or visits that matter most to you, then leave the rest of the itinerary open. You don’t have to fit every famous attraction into a first trip.
Should you choose a direct train or change in Brussels?
Search Eurostar for your dates and check whether the London to Amsterdam journey is direct or involves a change in Brussels. I’d compare the full itinerary, including the connection and the return, before deciding.
This route arrives at Amsterdam Centraal. Look at where your accommodation sits in relation to the station, and whether walking or local transport will be easier with your bags. The cheapest-looking journey may still need another fare at the end.
What could you do on a first visit?
Keep the first evening for a short walk near your accommodation and a meal. Give one day to a museum you particularly want to see and the surrounding area, checking admission arrangements beforehand. Use another day to explore a different neighbourhood at a gentler pace.
I’d pay attention around canal edges, bridges and busy cycle routes, particularly while looking at a map. Keep clear of cycle lanes and plan step-free alternatives where you need them.
What matters when booking the train?
Check the outward and return services separately rather than assuming the arrangements are identical.
- Read the current station-arrival and travel-document guidance.
- If changing in Brussels, allow a connection you can manage comfortably with luggage.
- Compare the flexibility of the fares.
- If travelling with a rail pass, check any reservation requirements.
I don’t show live fares here. Confirm the full price on the seller’s booking screen before paying.
