West Highland Line: a scenic Scotland train journey
Trade the motorway for lochs, open moorland and a railway that makes the journey the main event. Scotland’s West Highland Line is an invitation to slow down.

Choose the journey, then the destination
The West Highland Line connects Glasgow with Oban or Fort William and Mallaig. For a longer Highland escape, choose the Fort William and Mallaig branch. Make space in your itinerary for the railway itself rather than treating it as a transfer. ScotRail’s official scenic-route guide is the starting point for choosing your branch.
Build a little breathing room into the trip
Our suggested approach is to stay in Glasgow before travelling north, then spend a night or two in Fort William or Mallaig. This is an itinerary idea, not a packaged holiday. Check the last train before committing to accommodation and leave a generous margin for onward connections.
The everyday train is part of the adventure
Do not confuse a regular ScotRail service with a separately ticketed heritage excursion. Check which train you are booking, its stops and available facilities. Pack a small bag, layers and something to eat, and keep your camera close for the changing landscape.
Check before you travel
Route inspiration is not a live timetable or fare quote. Check current availability, ticket conditions, engineering works and assistance arrangements for your travel date.
