GOBYTRAIN · WINTER 2026 / 2027Edinburgh Christmas markets by train
If you fancy a trip to Edinburgh when the lights are on and the stalls are busy, I’d start with the train and somewhere sensible to sleep. The festive bits are easier to enjoy when you’ve already sorted the journey home.
Edinburgh Waverley · Suggested stay: 2 nights
When are Edinburgh’s Christmas events in 2026?
The organiser lists 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Individual attractions have their own opening dates and ticket requirements, so check the official programme ↗ before committing to a non-refundable stay.
Which station should I use?
Edinburgh Waverley is the nearest station. The organiser describes the East Princes Street Gardens entrance as approximately two minutes away via the step-free Waverley Bridge exit. Allow more time for crowds, bags and finding your way. See the official arrival guide ↗.
Coming from London? Use my London to Edinburgh rail guide. Starting elsewhere? Compare your full outward and return routes before booking accommodation.
Where should I look for a budget-friendly stay?
- Near Waverley: convenient for arrival and the city centre. Check the real walking route, not just the map distance.
- The Old Town: useful for wandering, but check gradients, steps and noise reviews.
- Near Haymarket: compare room prices alongside the cost and timing of onward transport.
A hostel can keep costs down, but you could treat yourself to a simple private room if a quiet night matters more. Compare the total for your whole stay, breakfast and cancellation terms. These are areas to investigate, not personally tested hotel recommendations.
How would I spend two nights?
- Arrival afternoon: leave your bags, find your bearings and choose one part of the festive programme. Avoid a timed booking immediately after the train.
- Full day: explore the Old Town in daylight, stop for lunch and return to the lights later. One paid attraction can be plenty.
- Departure morning: breakfast and a final wander near your luggage, with a generous margin for the return train.
This is a suggested pace, not a package. I’d rather enjoy one evening properly than march across the city trying to fit everything in.
What if it rains or I need a quieter break?
The National Museum of Scotland has free general admission, with charges for some exhibitions. It closes on 25 December and publishes shorter hours for 26 December and 1 January. Recheck the opening information for your date.
Read the event access information ↗ if slopes, temporary surfaces or crowded walkways affect your plans. I’d keep an indoor stop in the day and wear shoes suited to wet pavements.
Flying in, or planning your phone connection?
Use the airport rail guide for the first comparison. If the scheduled transport does not suit your arrival, here is an alternative to price.
I’d compare the train first. If your flight lands after the last service, your accommodation is awkward to reach, or several people are sharing, a pre-booked private transfer may be worth pricing. Confirm the destination is served, the full vehicle price, luggage allowance, waiting time and cancellation conditions. A private transfer is not automatically cheaper or quicker.
