GOBYTRAIN · WINTER 2026 / 2027

Three days in London in December by train

London in December can tempt you into booking something for every spare hour. I’d choose a few neighbourhoods, leave room for a warm café and spend money on the things you actually want to do.

Which dates suit this itinerary?

This is a suggested three-day break on ordinary operating days before Christmas, with a half-day arrival and departure. It is not a Christmas Day itinerary. Use Visit London’s Christmas guide ↗ to check the current events, then compare trains and rooms for the same dates.

How do I get from the train to my hotel?

Check your arrival station’s name first: London has several mainline terminals. Use TfL’s journey planner ↗ from that station to the actual accommodation address, with your arrival time and access needs.

A hostel or simple hotel can work well. A cheaper room further out needs to earn its saving after extra transport and late-night journeys. Compare the full two-night cost, not an attractive nightly headline.

Day one: where should I start with the lights?

After checking in, I’d begin around Covent Garden, then choose a manageable walk towards Regent Street. Check the current lighting dates in the official Christmas guide. Keep the first evening flexible in case the journey takes longer than expected.

Street wandering can be the main event. Set a food budget, choose a warm stop and call it a night while it still feels like a holiday. If that walk is too much, stay in one area or plan a transport link.

Day two: can I combine a free gallery with a riverside walk?

Start around Trafalgar Square with the National Gallery. General admission is free; some exhibitions cost extra. Free advance tickets are available. The published closures include 24–26 December and 1 January, so this option does not work every day.

After lunch, head towards Westminster for a riverside stretch, or the South Bank if the weather suits. This is a walking suggestion, not a promise of a particular market being open. Check official listings before adding a seasonal event.

For the evening, choose one paid treat if you fancy it: a show, a light trail or dinner. Read the finish time and cancellation terms, then check the journey back.

Day three: what fits before the train home?

I’d stay near the hotel or departure station: breakfast, a final browse and time to collect luggage. Avoid a timed attraction across London just before a train-specific departure. That breathing room is part of the plan.

How do I keep the weekend affordable?

  • Add return rail fares, two nights’ accommodation and local travel before choosing activities.
  • Allow separately for meals and any airport transfers.
  • Choose one paid treat and keep a small contingency.
  • Compare the total room price for everyone travelling, including compulsory charges.

For arriving by air, check the airport rail guide first. Late arrivals or awkward onward journeys may justify comparing a private transfer.

I’d compare the train first. If your flight lands after the last service, your accommodation is awkward to reach, or several people are sharing, a pre-booked private transfer may be worth pricing. Confirm the destination is served, the full vehicle price, luggage allowance, waiting time and cancellation conditions. A private transfer is not automatically cheaper or quicker.
